The sports equipment company MD was kind enough to send me a pair of their MD Compression Calf Sleeves to run through the paces. Here is my short review:
The shipping from MD was super quick and I had these sleeves within a couple days. As I was unable to actually run (due to injury) I pulled them on and wore them around the house on the day they arrived.
They went on easily, fit great, and within a few minutes I forgot I had them on. I’ve noticed that some calf sleeves get uncomfortable over time, probably due to having too much compression, but these were great.
Last week I was finally able to run again and I pulled these on for my first couple runs. First a speedy little 5k and a few days later a long, slow eleven mile effort.
I found the sleeves to be great for the rigors of speed work. They gave just the right amount of compression to help keep me moving at a good pace. I have always been an advocate of compression gear. These worked for me.
For the longer run, I never really thought about them. I consider this the highest compliment I can give a piece of trail running gear. They did what they were supposed to do. They supplied just the right amount of compression without ever getting too tight or too loose. The cuffs at both the top and the bottom kept the sleeves in place without any pinching or chaffing.
They are thick enough to get the job done, but thin enough that they won’t cause overheating. They seem to breathe quite well.
Structurally, they appear to be very well constructed. There are no loose threads, the material is both flexible and sturdy, and despite my not-so-gentle tugging there has been no ripping or tearing. They feel very well made and I’m confident that I will be able to use them for a long time.
The only downside I found was that the design on the back of the sleeves seems to be flaking off after just two runs and two washings. (see photo above) A minor quibble to be sure.
All in all, these are a solid new piece of gear. While I did receive these at no cost, they are a good deal on Amazon. Depending on size and color, they range from $8.99 to $13.99 for a pair.
