Brazen Dragon Flies

On September 19th, I ran the Drag-N-Fly trail half marathon put on by the most excellent folks over at Brazen Racing.  If you have ever done one of their races, you probably know Sam and Jasmine. They are the definition of AMAZING and if you live anywhere near the San Francisco Bay Area you owe it to yourself to run with them.

Why?

  • Great courses
  • The BEST volunteers
  • Amazing post race grub
  • Supremely cool finishers medals (see pic above)
  • Delicious post race food (ice cream FREAKIN’ sandwiches!)
  • Cool, fun, friendly runners

This race is probably one of the toughest on their calendar. It’s starts with a steep hill and then gets steeper. The second hill is a walker for EVERYONE and it clocks in at roughly a mile. Yes. One Mile. I did not enter into this race lightly, but knew it would be a great training run/race in advance of the North Face Endurance 50 miler in December (more on that in another post!).

The Drag-N-Fly course is absolutely beautiful, winding through the hills near the Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve in Antioch, CA. All the reasons I run trails are captured here: hills, gorgeous views, ridge trails, fire roads, canyons, technical terain, stairs, rocky terain, NATURE in abundance. The only thing this course doesn’t have is mud, not in September anyway. The weather was wonderful, clear blue skies, though it was on the warm side.

As a fellow runner said to me out on the course:

“Well, it might be steep, but at least it’s hot!”

Amen, brother!

I ran this same race five years ago. My goal for this year was to turn back the clock and beat my 2010 self.

How did I do?

2010:

  • 11th overall
  • 3rd in my age group
  • 2hrs 16min 28sec

2015:

  • 10th overall
  • 2nd in my age group
  • 2hrs 10min 19sec

Mission accomplished!

Run on, Sisters and Brothers!
